Consultancy
We can size generating sets for clients, develop specifications,
assess tenders, perform grading studies, manage the projects
and manage the commissioning. And it doesn’t have to be
on Generating Sets or even on our Generating Sets. The level
of expertise of our staff is such that we offer the skills that
we have to the clients that need them, wherever they need them.
No coincidence then that many of our largest clients also retain
us as consultants on all their generating set or LV power system
works.

One for the Aficionados
The real boffins amongst you might spot that this alternator is very large
compared to the engine. That’s because it has been significantly over-sized.
Why? For this project we performed a full sizing study for the client.
We established that, to ensure that the client’s very sensitive equipment
wasn’t disrupted when the Generating Sets came on line, a very low “transient”
was necessary from the Generating Set. This required us to oversize the
alternator to achieve this by around 100%. In turn this required us to
then torsionally asses the compatibility of the engine and the alternator.
Whenever we perform sizing studies we work from the client’s view of what
they need and advise them accordingly. What we don’t do is tell them what
our nearest generating set is and they can go lump it.
Oh, and the very sensitive equipment? A nuclear reactor.

Scheme Design
We have unrivalled experience in the design of the widest variety
of generating set applications including unattended duty sets,
CHP installations and multi-set installations, as well as all
manner of stand-by power applications. Three recent projects

Offshore sets for Europe’s largest
wind farm – designed to withstand atmospheric extremes
they have to be able to operate for up to a year without
human intervention. |

engine jacket and exhaust
heat is used for drying tea leaves! |

Extension of a 275KV sub-station’s main LV incoming board to allow the
sub-station’s electrical infra-structure to be up graded without ever taking
the sub-station out of service. |

2 x 850KVA Sets for the Bank of New York. Mounted
in a second sub-basement with the only ventilation
8 floors above, these units include remote radiators,
twin wall and ceramic in-fill exhaust flues, remote
fuel tanks and 70dB(A) at 1m room acoustics. They
also synchronise and include dual redundant starting
systems. |

Project Management
Project Management means more to us than sending you the bill on time. Our Project
Managers are there to make sure that your scheme is successful. They will make
sure that the equipment is what you want, that the method used to install it
is safe and legal, that it is effectively integrated in to your existing systems,
that your documentation is updated to reflect it, that old equipment is removed
in accordance with all the latest environmental legislation. We operate as both
Sub-contractor and Principal Contractor under the CDM Regulations. Full service,
one stop shop.

And the Lights Never Went Out!
The bay at the end is an extension to an existing
main LV incoming board at National Grid Kearsley
275KV sub-station in Manchester. It was supplied
as a part of a contract with WARDPOWER as the Prncipal
Contractor under the CDM regulations that saw:

Manufacturing
We manufacture all our plant in Sheffield using proven industry methods that
guarantee product quality and reliability and not just a cheap price. Our Chief
Engineer would rather hang from the factory crane than put an unferruled wire in
a terminal or use plastic conduit (shame not all engine manufacturers think the
same way...).

Perfectionism is…
See this Emergency Stop? This goes on the outside of our containers.
It’s a solid metal construction, fully gasketed, IP 65 sealed unit with
locking plate, security cover and stainless steel fittings and fixings.
On the negative side it didn’t cost £15 from the local wholesalers.
On the plus side, it will last 40 years.

Quality Assurance
In an age where a poodle parlour may have ISO9000 accreditation, quality systems
have never been so open to interpretation. We deal with this by operating an
integrated Quality and Health & Safety management systems which offers the
flexibility to use clients’ Quality Systems if required

Installation
Our site Installation teams can put anything anywhere, whether it is a 2MVA engine
through a 4ft square hole or a 25,000Kg containerized set on to a 6th floor roof.

an 800KVA Generating Set being installed in a Merchant Banking Centre
in London. One of a pair providing full synchronisation
with the mains supply for bumpless transfer for testing and mains

Commissioning
Commissioning to us means more than “Well
it works mate – it’s commissioned!” We agree
with every client the test and commissioning requirements of
the project from Primary Injection Tests of Switchgear to CT
magnetisation curves, to 3 phase simulation tests on switchboards,
to engine transient response tests against reactive loads.

Withdrawal
We can take out as well as put in. We are licensed Waste Brokers and
Carriers and experienced in the safe removal of all natures of plant from all
natures of place.

A 50 year veteran retires
One of a pair of 375KVA sets from National Grid Warley is removed
to make way for a new WARDPOWER Type Registered 723KVA set. This
set, fitted wth remote oil cooling radiators and air start units
presented more of waste removal challenge than the average. |
